Call my pocket, 2017
Performance
For the first group exhibition of the class of Asta Gröting, a small gallery in Hannover was converted into what could best be described as a very large phone booth: Seven sand-coloured wall-mounted telephones hanging in row behind two large shop windows. Thick phonebook-sized notepads have a list of 18 artworks and corresponding phone numbers printed on them. Every artwork could only be called with a 3-digit number.
For the duration of the exhibition I carried a second cellphone in my pocket at all times. This modified Nokia 3510i that makes no sound and does not vibrate takes every incoming call automatically. So when visitors dialled 833 (a randomly generated number) they would simply call my pocket. Visitors could deliberately invade my privacy by listening in on conversations or generally be a witness in my everyday activities.
