The work that goes into the presentation usually remains hidden from the public, almost concealed. As if the knowledge of this profane aspect would interfere with the viewing of the art and detract from its illusionary power. In Column, however, we see a surreal situation that seemingly allows a glimpse behind the scenes: The freight protrudes from the cargo box of a white lorry. This work was created for the second Miniaturbiennale, an exhibition that took place entirely inside a model diorama. Yet it incorporates a very real element of any human-sized exhibition. The archetypal art logistics lorry is a well-known sight to anyone working in the arts. However, its load, which is reminiscent of modernist sculpture, is actually an oversized origami spring folded out of brass sheets. The ‘art’ also appears to be much longer than the cargo space itself and there are no workers in sight. Is this a failed attempt to fit a square peg into a round hole? Was it compressed inside the truck like an art handler's idea of a jack-in-the-box? In fact, it is much more: a universal symbol of ceasefire and willingness to negotiate. Whoever waves a white flag is unarmed and wants to solve a conflict without violence. For this reason, the white flag is protected under the laws of war as a sign of truce. However, the white fabric – which in this context could also be called “uncoloured” – also makes it into a non-symbol. Similar to a fire extinguisher, the flag is available in a hallway or lobby, to be used freely in case of an emergency. The exhibition piece is a random product of industrial manufacturing: during the cutting process, a knot in the wood was cut exactly in the middle. This door was obviously fitted after the fact since its build quality, size and door hardware did not match the rest of the building. The staircase that this door closed off was exposed again, the walls replastered and painted.&nbsp;The building was thereby restored and the original volume of the space reconstructed. On this scale it becomes a mighty tree. This work was part of the exhibition One and an other are another. A magazine with the same title is published along the exhibition in 15 issues, it contains photo essays by the artists and a “critical dictionary”. The publication refers to the surrealist magazine documents. Its 15 issues were published between 1929 and 1931 and featured a critical dictionary as well. It runs through three doorways and crosses several rooms on its way across the exhibition. Whether or not this connection was planned by the architects of the building doesn’t matter anymore. The main focus is to play, a game that covers art production on a meta level. Along the straight line runs a sort of channel from MDF, a racetrack for various vehicles that essentially are either tools or work equipment: A spirit level, a roll of tape, a paint tube. Every one that enters the space first stumbles (either literally or metaphorically) upon the track, that they meet again several times on their way trough the exhibition.
